INTERN AT DISPEL

This role is part time, and it is intended to be a learning internship.   In exchange for your efforts, you will be provided with studio access, as well as access to free materials and firings.  We expect interns to not only be learning the essential studio functions and protocols for the internship, but also be inquisitive and persistent in learning and developing their own bodies of work.

We want all of our interns to walk away from this experience with a new set of skills and an impressive practical resume.  Skills that will be learned will include; basic woodworking, operating heavy equipment, introduction to glaze chemistry, basic sculpting, wheel throwing & hand building, kiln maintenance,  firing gas & atmospheric kilns, programming and firing electric kilns, installation of finished works, as well as participate & organize team works and community outreach.

It is our intention to provide an experience in which each intern will achieve a basic and useful understanding of studio functions, as well as developing a confidence within their own ceramic process.

  • Portfolio of 5-10 images of work made in the last 2 years, submitted through email as a .jpeg with title, date, medium, scale, and firing temperature.

  • 2 professional references

RESPONSIBILITIES/EXPECTATIONS

  • 4-1- hours a week, 12pm -3pm time slots

  • Hard work, and a willingness to get dirty

  • Tenacity

  • Ability to take shifts for atmospheric firings, (always outside work hours)Assisting in building large scale, monolithic sculptures

  • Help maintain a safe and clean studio environment

  • Assist in the preparation, loading, firing, and unloading of kilns

  • Glaze and clay mixing

  • Kiln maintenance

QUALIFICATIONS

  • You are currently pursuing a fine arts degree in ceramics OR have 3+ years of experience working with clay

  • You must have reliable transportation

  • Tenacity for learning

  • Sense of humor

  • Common sense - for practical and safety reasons

  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs

  • Enthusiasm for ceramics and a willingness to learn

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills

  • Ability to work well in a team environment and follow instructions

  • Excellent communication skills and a positive attitude
